5 Reasons for Squeaky Brakes
Good working brakes are essential for safe driving. Learn how to tell what may be causing squealing brakes to help you find out if you need to take immediate action or can get away with delaying a trip to our service department.
New brakes squeak, so if you have just purchased a new car or had brake pads replaced, you may notice squealing noises. While it can be unsettling, squeaky new brakes usually don't mean there's a problem. The sound happens as the new brake pads press against the rotor. You can relax and expect the noise to lessen as the brake pads wear in.
In some cases, you might think your new brake pads are squealing when it's actually the other set of brake pads. Remember, cars have front and rear brakes. If you hear noises after getting new brakes on the front or rear, the sounds could indicate the second set of brake pads is ready for replacement, too.
Weather, such as damp weather, rain, and cold, can cause brakes to squeal. If you only notice brake sounds in inclement weather, this could be the cause. This tends to happen because of the type of brake pad used and is most common with compact cars. In this scenario, do your best to ignore the noise, because your car is still safe to drive.
Groaning Sound From Brakes
If you don't drive your car often, the brakes can make a groaning sound when you first start to drive. This happens because corrosion builds up on the brakes as your car sits. Once you start to drive, the corrosion burns off, and soon your car sounds normal. If groaning or grinding sounds don't go away after a few minutes, consider getting your brakes checked for peace of mind.
Loud Squealing Sounds
If your brakes make loud squealing noises each time you press the pedal, it's a warning sign you need new brakes. The loud squeals are a built-in safety function to let you know your brakes are at the end of their natural life. The sooner you change your brake pads, the lower the risk of damage to other components of the brake system. If you delay, you could wind up paying for new brake calipers, too. Worse, you could experience total brake failure.
Brakes Squeak When Stopping
As brake pads age, they are less effective. When it seems like you need more time or distance to come to a complete stop, or when you hear a persistent squeak when you press the pedals, your brake pads are ready for replacement. Other indicators that it's time for new brake pads are a shaking steering wheel, the car pulling to the side as you stop, or pulsing sensations from the brake.
While these are the major causes of squeaky brakes, there are so many factors it would be impossible to list them. If you aren't sure what's making your brakes squeal, your best bet is always to go to schedule a service appointment so we can troubleshoot the issue.
Before your appointment, take notes about the sound your brakes make, when it occurs, and any other clues you think might be relevant. This will help the us identify the problem quickly, which can lower your bill.
By listening for noises and servicing brakes when they need it, you will save money, stay safe, and keep your car in good shape. Your brakes are one of the most important systems in your car, which means this is one area where you can never delay needed maintenance.
