When Should I Replace My Brake Pads?
Owning a high-quality car like a Mercedes-Benz brings with it a lot of work to keep it properly maintained. One of the maintenance needs that must be tended to are the brake pads. Brake pads, as you may know, are the component of the braking system that will clamp down on the brake rotors to slow the vehicle down. While they are durable, they won't last forever. Find out when you should replace your brake pads!
How long do brake pads last?
It's generally recommended that you replace the brake pads every 30,000 to 50,000 miles. However, this number can vary greatly based on who is driving and in what conditions. Every time you brake, you're causing a small amount of wear and tear on the brake pads. While this wear and tear is small, it can really add up over time. Drivers who put on mostly city miles and those who brake more aggressively will need to replace their brake pads more frequently, as they will be using them the most. Drivers who put on mostly highway miles (where less braking is required) and conservative drivers who generally coast to a stop can get away with waiting longer to replace the brake pads.
Signs that the brake pads need to be replaced
While those mileage markers are a good guideline to follow, sometimes there are other indicators that your brake pads are wearing down fast. The biggest indicator is a squealing or screeching noise when you apply the brakes. There are small metal hairs built into the brake pads that are designed to let you know it's time to get them replaced. When you hear this noise, it means the brake pads are near the end of their lifespan. Some vehicles also have indicator lights that will let you know that the brake pads must be replaced. You can check your owner's manual to see if your vehicle comes equipped with this warning light system.
